Jazzin’ at The Shedd – Chicago

One of the little known summer activities in Chicago is “Jazzin’ at The Shedd.”  It’s an ongoing event held on Wednesdays during June trough September.  This year, Shedd Aquarium is celebrating its 20th anniversary.  What better reason to stop by, mingle with the fish, other party-goers and live jazz bands?  You’ll enjoy cocktails, fireworks and stunning lakefront views.

Why go to the JELLIES (jelly fish) exhibit without a good stiff drink? That would just be crazy!

Admission is $18 which gives you access to most of exhibits (except for new ones) and the bi-level terrace overlooking the Lake Michigan.  Food and drinks are at an additional cost.

I stopped by last Wednesday around 7pm solo. First, I checked out a few exhibits before grabbing a nice cold beer on the 2nd floor terrace where the party was in full swing,  The stage was set up and the band was playing cool jazz to a very grateful and ample crowd.  There are bars set up on both levels of the terrace.  Should you prefer a more quiet environment, there is a restaurant inside where another band performs.

Bartenders were offering up a large selection of drinks, including some specialty cocktails.  It was a gorgeous summer evening with a sunny sky that shifted into a stunning sunset.  An abundance of Chicago residents and city visitors enjoyed each other, the music and fabulous views.  I had a nice time chatting with several other party-goers that night.  Very fun 🙂

Since it was Wednesday, Lake Michigan was swollen with all types of boats whose captains were choosing their prime positions for the fireworks.  Navy Pier shoots off fireworks at 9:30pm. (Navy Pier has fireworks every Wednesday and Saturday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day).

Not interested in ogling the fish or paying the $18 admission fee?  No worries!  You can simply wander on over and pull up a patch of grass on the lovely hill outside.  Lots of people do just that every Wednesday evening.  They bring blankets or chairs and set up outside.  They get to hear the live jazz just the same as the folks perched above on the terraces.  And, they have the have the same views of Lake Michigan and the fireworks.  AWESOME!
